What insurance does MedStar Health accept?

OhioHealth serves Columbus, Ohio. Which carriers file plans in those markets, what the plan types mean for hospital access, and how to verify your own plan.

The honest answer is that it depends on the individual plan rather than the carrier, and it can change during the year. Here is what is actually knowable about MedStar Health, and how to settle it for your own plan in about ten minutes.

Where MedStar Health operates

MedStar Health serves the Baltimore, Maryland area. Maryland runs its own health insurance marketplace, Maryland Health Connection, rather than HealthCare.gov — which matters here for a practical reason: the plan filings for state-run exchanges are not published in the federal county-level file, so anyone showing you a tidy national table of what this hospital accepts is guessing.

MedStar operates across the Maryland–DC line, and a plan bought in one jurisdiction does not automatically carry the other’s network. If you live in Maryland and work in DC, that is the thing to check first.

Why nobody can give you a straight list

Network contracts are signed per plan, not per carrier. The same insurer can sell one plan that includes MedStar and another, in the same county, that does not. A page telling you “MedStar accepts Carrier X” is describing one plan on one date, and it goes stale without anyone updating it.

Contracts also lapse mid-year. A hospital and an insurer can fail to agree terms in March, and patients find out from a letter. That is normal, and it is why the only answer worth having is the one attached to your own plan.

The mistake that costs the most

Buying on premium alone and assuming the hospital carries over from last year. If your new plan is an HMO or EPO and MedStar sits outside its network, there is no out-of-network benefit to absorb it — that is simply the year you have bought.

How to settle it for your plan

  1. Get the network name, not just the carrier. It is in the plan documents and is often different from the brand on the card.
  2. Search that exact network in the plan’s own provider directory — not a general web search, which mixes plan years.
  3. Call MedStar’s billing department with the plan and network name and ask whether they are contracted with it for the coming year.
  4. Do it again at renewal. A network that included them this year is not a promise about next year.

Self-employed and need MedStar Health covered?

The buying problem is different when you are 1099. There is no employer plan behind you and no HR department to check the network, so confirming that MedStar is in the specific plan you buy is entirely on you.

The second problem is that your income is a guess. Premium tax credits are calculated on what you project to earn next year — a number a contractor or commission-paid household genuinely does not know in November. The enhanced subsidy rules expired at the end of 2025, so above 400% of the federal poverty level, roughly $62,600 for a single filer, the credit disappears entirely. There is no taper.

The mechanics of both — how the credit reconciles, and how to claim the self-employed premium deduction so an S-corp does not lose it — are the same wherever you live, so they live in one place rather than being repeated here: the self-employed premium deduction and subsidy reconciliation →

Common questions about MedStar Health and insurance

What insurance does MedStar Health accept?

There is no single answer, because network contracts are signed per plan rather than per carrier. The same insurer can sell one plan that includes MedStar and another that does not, and those contracts can change during the plan year. The only reliable answer is the one you get by checking your specific plan against MedStar directly before you enrol.

Is MedStar in network on a marketplace plan in Maryland?

It depends entirely on which marketplace plan you buy. Maryland runs its own exchange, Maryland Health Connection, and the plans sold there differ in which hospital systems they include. Check the specific plan's provider directory and confirm with MedStar's billing office before you enrol.

How do I confirm MedStar is covered before I enrol?

Do it in three steps. Get the exact plan name and network name from the plan documents, not just the carrier. Search that network in the plan's own provider directory. Then call MedStar's billing department, give them the plan and network name, and ask whether they are contracted with it for the coming year.

What happens if MedStar is out of network on my plan?

That depends on the plan type. An HMO or EPO generally pays nothing out of network except in a genuine emergency, so you would be responsible for the full cost. A PPO usually pays something, at a lower rate and against a separate deductible. This is why the plan type matters as much as the premium.
