The Nashville area is served by TriStar Health, Vanderbilt Health and Ascension Saint Thomas, among others. Whether your plan pays at any of them depends on the network attached to the specific plan you buy — not on the carrier’s name, and not on what the hospital told you last year.
Who actually files plans in Nashville
5 carriers filed marketplace plans across the 3 Nashville-area counties in the CMS Plan Year 2026 file: Ambetter Health, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, CareSource, Cigna Healthcare and UnitedHealthcare. Lowest-cost Silver for a 40-year-old runs about $751 to $751 a month across the area before any premium tax credit, and the 9 counties carry 585 plan records between them.
No plan sold on the marketplace here is a PPO. Across the 9 Nashville-area counties in the federal file, every plan is an EPO — Tennessee files no HMO and no PPO on the marketplace at all. That matters more than any premium: those plan types pay for care inside their own network and, outside a genuine emergency, generally pay nothing outside it. There is no out-of-network fallback to soften a wrong choice — the hospital you want is either in the network you pick, or you are paying cash.
The 9 counties in the Nashville market
Premiums are filed by rating area, so these counties share one filing. What differs between them is how many plans were filed and what the benchmark costs.

Why the carrier name tells you almost nothing
The same insurer sells several plans in the same county, and they do not share a network. A carrier can have one plan that includes a hospital system and another that excludes it entirely. This is the single most common way people get this wrong: they check that “the carrier is accepted”, enrol, and discover in January that the specific plan they bought was not.
What you are checking is the plan network, named on the plan itself — something like a carrier’s “Select” or “Choice” network, not the carrier. Two questions get you there: does this exact plan include the hospital, and does it include the specific physicians you see there.
How to verify TriStar Health, Vanderbilt Health and Ascension Saint Thomas coverage properly
- Start from the plan, not the carrier. Get the full plan name and the network name from the marketplace listing.
- Check the carrier’s own directory for that network, filtered to the 2027 plan year rather than the current one.
- Phone the hospital’s billing department and read them the plan name. They will tell you whether they are contracted with that network. This is the step that actually settles it.
- Check the physicians separately. A hospital being in-network does not put every doctor practising there in-network — anaesthesia, radiology and pathology are frequently contracted separately.
- Write down the date and who told you. Contracts change mid-year.
What we can and cannot tell you here
The carrier and plan-type figures above come from the CMS landscape file and are checkable. Network participation is not in that file, is renegotiated during the year, and is not something this page will ever assert. Anyone publishing a fixed list of “insurance accepted at TriStar Health, Vanderbilt Health and Ascension Saint Thomas” is either copying a hospital’s marketing page or guessing, and either way it goes stale without warning. What I will do is check it for you against every plan filed in your county, and tell you the date I checked.
